Gorgeous, is it not? Water-clear with a cool inclusion and glass-like interior markings, this polished Obsidian Obelisk simply vibrates to the most beautiful aqua/teal/blue color in the palette. It's hard to take my eyes off this hypnotic specimen!
But let's back up a bit and talk about Obsidian in general. Obsidian is not a mineral - it's glass.
Often called a Mineraloid, it is a product of naturally-occurring volcanic activity
, mineral-like but not crystalline, darker colored and opaque. In fact, traditional geologists are adamant that there is no such thing as transparent blue Obsidian! However.....in the last few years, new Obsidian finds
have been producing beautiful blue and green specimens that are totally transparent!
At least, this is the story being told by miners and vendors (I've talked with a few myself). Much lab testing has been done; and I have yet to hear of any
test results that are conclusively negative. Since the discovery of new rocks and minerals is an ongoing process, well, I personally tend to lean toward new possiblities. So the question remains: is this Obelisk naturally-occurring glass or man-made glass? Or does it even matter? The verdict, of course, is up to you. But I've put my
vote in the Obsidian column! Brazil.
